Color photograph. Paper mounted on 14" x 11" piece of cardboard, with captions typed on labels by Peeke. April 1983. Picture of Dr. Oswaldo Hurtado, president of Ecuador, granting title to Waorani lands in what was known as the Protectorate. In this picture, he is presenting a title to the lands around the community of Toñaempade to Komi, Dayuma's husband. President Hurtado also promised the establishment of a Waorani Ethnic Preserve, and he assured the Waorani access to the Yasuní National Park, both of which encompassed traditional Wao territory. Dayuma (with headband) is standing next to the president, and Catherine Peeke, who helped with translation, next to her. From BGC Archives, Accession 08-36, box 5.
